ILI Alumni Event: An Offering to Unsettle Settlement

An Offering to Unsettle Settlement

“How does one make sense of their own participation in the world, taking into consideration pasts that have formed legacies of colonialism and disenfranchisement? This question, considered through a philosophy of addressing and repairing harm, has led us to center Indigenous and land-based environmental stewardship and climate change mitigation in our collaboration. Drawing from our studio practices, we developed An Offering to ask participants to reflect on their stories, climate, and futures while grounding them in the intimacy of their immediate environments.”

We are thrilled to announce the release of An Offering to Unsettle Settlement, a collaborative participatory project by AIR 2020 cohort veronique d’entremont, Joel Garcia and iris yirei hu. The project is a free remote physical and digital offering intended to deepen the connection between participants and their past, present and future environments.

The project is composed of three key elements: a limited edition print of principles co-created by the artists, a somatic practice presented both through guided audio and poetic text, and an accordion book enabling participants to create their own artwork based on and made from their immediate surroundings.

A free physical version of the work is offered to the first 50 respondents of the announcement of the work. If you would like to receive a limited edition, please enter your details here. As numbers are limited, we cannot guarantee that every respondent will receive a mailed edition. Therefore, from May 7, all materials will be available for download. We hope you will participate in one of these forms.

On Saturday, June 5, 2021, 10AM-12PM, all who have participated in the work are invited to a virtual artist-guided reflection session. This will be an opportunity for you, our participants-turned-collaborators, to learn more about the process of developing the work, to ask questions, and to share discoveries you have made while engaging with the project. Keep an eye on your inbox for registration and download details soon.
